That this may be a sign among you when your children ask in time to come, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ Then you shall answer them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. And these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.” Joshua 4 6 and 7

In today’s scripture, God had, by the hand of Joshua, parted the River Jordan and let the Israelites walk across on dry land.  Joshua then asked 12 men, representatives from each tribe, to pick up stones from the middle of the River and keep them as a memorial of the miracle God had performed in their lives.

So many times in scripture, God instructed that the Children of Israel keep one thing or another as a memorial of what he had done.  The feast of the Passover, a measure of manna and now the stones from the Jordan?  Why was God interested in his children keeping these things as a memorial?

As I meditated on this scripture, I came to the conclusion that many times we find ourselves feeling low, down and anxious, we have neglected to pick our own stones from the River Jordan!  Every time God comes through for us, we too should keep some form of memorial!

The reason is this, when the new sets of challenges come, and come they surely will, looking at your memorial stones will give you the needed re-assurance of the faithfulness of God and allow you peace of mind!  The human mind and the devil are a very tricky pair.

After God has answered a prayer or done something really great for you, the lapse of time makes you either forget totally or belittle the thing God has done.  All of a sudden you begin to rationalise that healing, or explain away the miracle as being a logical occurrence.

God always wants us to remember what He has done in our lives!  When we remember His faithfulness in the things that happened in our past, we are re-assured that no matter what comes our way, our God who is the unchangeable one, will come through for us!

If you have not been doing so, you need to start picking up your memorial stones!  Write a testimony journal.  Drop reminders!  Record your testimonies.  Whatever you do, remember them and pass them down to your children and their children and their children!  Because of the memorial stones Joshua picked, you and I know that God parted the Jordan River!  Someone will hear of your testimony too and will be encouraged.  And if no one ever hears of your testimony, you yourself will remember what God did for you and that will strengthen your faith to surmount the next set of challenges that life brings your way!

Go pick your memorial stones and God will help us all in the name of Jesus!

Prayer:

Father in the name of Jesus.  Thank you for your word today.  Give us the grace to keep our testimonies always before our eyes that we may remember all your doings and give you praise always!! Take all the glory Almighty God, in Jesus mighty name we have prayed!
