A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.” 2 Kings 4:1

In the scripture, a widow whose husband was a prophet while he was alive, came running to Elijah for help.  Her husband had been in debt before he died and had used his two sons as collateral for his debts.  Now he was dead, and his widow was about to lose her two children.  Elisha worked a great miracle in her life so much so that she was not only able to repay her debt, but also became a wealthy woman.  Today’s episode however, is not about this miracle.  Today’s episode rather is a pointer to the fact that our acts as parents have a ricochet effect in the lives of our children.

As I read this scripture, I began to imagine what would have happened if Elisha had not stepped into this situation.  Innocent children who knew nothing about their parent’s borrowing habits, would have entered into captivity due to no fault of theirs.  Irrespective of their dreams, aspirations, hard work and determination, they would have become slaves for the rest of their lives!  All because their father who by the way, scripture describes as a man who feared God, did not adhere to the principles taught by this God whom he feared!  To parents listening to me this morning, the bible says in Proverbs 13:22 that a good man, leaves an inheritance to his children and their children.  Among the synonyms for the word inheritance are, legacy, heirloom, fortune, and bequest, ALL good things.  You can not leave debts for your children to pay!  And by debts, I do not mean only money!  Some people are in some form of spiritual captivity because of thing their parents did in the past.  In our scripture, if Elisha had not stepped in, the lives of these children would have been jeopardized!  Our actions have a ricochet effect on our children!  Everything we do, (or don’t do) is a seed and seeds germinate!

Before you do anything, ask yourself, would this leave the right legacy for my children?  Do not think of the present only.  Think of the future.  Think of the lives of your children.  Some people are laboring and toiling today as a result of wrong decisions their parents made.

Some parents dabbled into the occultic just a little bit and today, Satan is using this as his basis for holding their children captive.  Some parents entered into illicit relationships with men and women who had contrary spirits, and all of a sudden, everything they owned went down the drain, and their children too began to labour without success!  Some parents have borrowed money from various sources all over the place, and have left debts for their children to offset that could weigh them down!

A good man the bible says will not leave a debt, spiritual or physical, rather, he would lay up an inheritance for his children and their children!

Let us examine ourselves.  What have we done or what are we doing that could impact negatively on our children?  Are we treating other people’s children wrongly?  Are we playing dangerously with the occult?  Are we entering into unholy and illicit relationships with people who are not our wives or husbands?  Are we borrowing money recklessly without any plans to pay back?  Do not mortgage the future of your children!  Be wise!

Prayer:

Father in the name of Jesus.  Thank you for your word.  Today, Lord, for as many of us who have in one way or the other mortgaged the lives of our children, we ask for mercy! Please let your blood speak for us and cancel every negative effects of our decisions! Take all the glory Almighty God, in Jesus mighty name we have prayed!

Speak to you again soon!
