And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.” 2 Kings 4:2b

The scripture is taken from the story of Elisha and the widow whose sons were about to be sold into slavery.  After she had moaned and lamented of her woes to Elisha, he asked her a question – ‘What do you have?’  The widow replied – ‘I have nothing but a jar of oil!’ As far as this widow was concerned, she had nothing.

The Amplified version of the bible describes the jar as a very small jar of oil.  The oil to her, was almost good for nothing – it wasn’t enough for them to eat, nor would it have been enough for them to pay their debts.  As far as this widow was concerned, she had nothing!  Of course, we all know how the widow’s story ended, with the oil multiplying as she poured it into containers.

As I meditated on this scripture, I realised that, we too make the same mistake the widow made.  We belittle that which we find in our hands!  We look at our own oil as being almost good for nothing.  Scripture is replete with examples of God using people’s almost good for nothing ‘oils’ to work great miracles.  Moses had nothing but a rod in his hand, God used it!

The little boy whose name was never mentioned had just 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes, it was practically good for nothing in the circumstances but God used it!  As long as they were willing to present their almost good for nothing objects before the one who is able to make the useless useful, they became partakers of amazing testimonies.

The question for meditation is, what do you have in your hand?  What is it that looks so insignificant and almost good for nothing?  Is it a talent?  Is it money?  Is it your knowledge of a particular subject?  What is it?  Today, I urge you to present it before God!  Dare to step out of your comfort zone and pour yourself out into another vessel.  Serve others!  Serve God!  Use that oil which you feel is almost good for nothing and watch God multiply you!

When the widow stopped pouring oil into vessels, the flow ceased.  God is willing and able to continue to multiply that which you have in your hand and will do so, until you stop pouring of yourself into others!  Again, I ask, what do you have in your hand? Use it and He will multiply it!

May God bless us all!

Prayer:

Father in the name of Jesus.  Thank you for your word today.  Please give us the grace to give of ourselves, our talents, our money, our time!  Use what we have Lord.  Bless and multiply it and Take all the glory Almighty God, in Jesus mighty name we have prayed!
