Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, and said, “Where is the Lord God of Elijah?” And when he also had struck the water, it was divided this way and that; and Elisha crossed over. 2 Kings 2:14

In the last two episodes, we have been dealing with important principles for life, extracted from the lives of Elijah and Elisha as recorded in scripture.  We dealt with persistence and then, focus.  Today’s episode points us towards yet another very important principle for living the Christian life. Elisha had watched and learnt from Elijah for a long time.  He had listened to every word that Elijah had spoken, served him and probably memorized a lot of his teachings.  As at the time our anchor scripture was set, Elisha was all alone.  His mentor.  His teacher.  His guardian had gone.  Now he had to face the real world!  Bible records that he took Elijah’s mantle and confronted the first obstacle that came his way!  He used the principles Elijah had taught him.

This morning, the principle the Lord is teaching us is simple:  You may know 300 scriptures, you may have listened to a million messages, you may be able to quote all the great men and women of God on the earth, but until you practice the principles you know, until you use what you claim you know, until you actually DO THE word, nothing is going to change!  Elijah used the mantle and the waters parted!  You too need to do what needs to be done!  So many Christians are quietly enduring frustrations in their spiritual lives because they are not actual doers of the word!  Hearing is good.  Quoting is even better.  But only doing makes the sea divide for you to cross over on dry land!  A Christian who is ill, and prays but keeps confessing that he is ill has not actually done!  A Christian who is going through financial challenges and keeps announcing to all who care to listen that he is broke and poor, even though he is praying will not see any change.  Elisha did not get to the sea and start weeping and worrying and discussing the obstacle with people. No.  He prayed, and acted in faith!

Having head knowledge of scripture is a great start but when you come face to face with the obstacles, you need to use what you know.  Actually use it.  Be a doer of the principles and not just a reader.  The result you so desperately seek lies in tenaciously DOING the things God has taught you to do!  Use your mantle!  Sow that seed!  Begin to speak right!  Do that which you have to do and watch the situation change for your good!

Prayer

Father in the name of Jesus.  Thank you for your word today.  Please help us to be doers and  not just hearers and quoters! Take all the glory Almighty God, in Jesus mighty name we have prayed!
